A Virginia jury found the HR body SHRM broke disability law when it pulled a job offer from a candidate who needed her service dog, and awarded her 400,000 dollars. It had discussed the request but offered no workable fix, HR Dive reported October 13.
$400,000
awarded over one withdrawn job offer
Why this mattersThe company did discuss it and still lost, because the accommodations it offered did not cover the problem she described. Pull every accommodation you granted this year and ask the employee in writing whether it actually works. A partial yes is what a jury reads as a no.
Operations
Workday announced background agents on October 13 that flag missing payroll data before a run, watch open roles at risk of missing targets, and draft recruiter outreach. The customer picks what runs automatically, and the hiring agent ships early 2027.
2027
when the hiring and payroll agents reach everyone
Why this mattersThe useful part is not the automation, it is that you choose what runs without a human. Decide that now rather than at setup. List the HR steps an agent could run alone, mark each one automatic, needs review, or person decides, and hand that list to your vendor.
Operations
A Florida roofer sued on October 13 saying he worked about 60 hours a week at a flat 20 dollars an hour with no overtime, was paid in cash with no paystubs, and was fired after complaining. He claims 6,800 dollars and asks to cover three years of crews.
$6,800
one worker's claim, before it covers three years
Why this mattersThe individual number is small and the group version is not, and the missing paystubs are what makes it easy to file. Pull three months of hours for everyone paid hourly, flag every week over 40, and confirm the overtime premium and the paystub both exist.

Anand Mohan Verma and Ananth Govind Rajan at the Indian Institute of Science grew a map of how carbon dioxide turns into fuel on a copper surface from 152 reactions to 9,389. The small version named the wrong main product, while the full one matched the lab and predicted about 40 times more conversion, reported October 13 from Nature Communications.
40x
more conversion once every step was counted
Why this mattersThe cheap model was not roughly right, it was confidently wrong, and only the full one matched reality. Your cost per hire and turnover rate have the same failure. Before you spend against either number, check which steps and which people the formula leaves out.
Science
Qianli Liao, Liu Ziyin and Yulu Gan at MIT started with randomly connected artificial neurons and gave them one local rule, that a connection strengthens when both ends fire together. The network built itself into working circuits and classified images about as well as networks trained the usual top-down way, published October 9 in PNAS.
1 rule
all the structure came from one local rule
Why this mattersNobody designed the structure. One rule applied everywhere produced it. Your org chart is the top-down version. Pick one recurring decision your managers escalate, write the rule they should apply instead, and let them decide it without you for a month.
Science
Nature reported on October 14 that China has about 51,000 active AI researchers against 14,000 in the United States, drawing on figures from Digital Science. A Carnegie China study found 69% of top-conference authors who took their first degree in China were working there in 2025, up from 57% three years earlier.
51,000
active AI researchers, against 14,000 in the US
Why this mattersThe pool did not grow mostly by training more people, it grew by keeping the ones already trained. That is the cheaper lever for you too. Count how many people you trained in the last two years who have left, and price that against your next recruiting budget.

Ask in writing whether each accommodation you granted actually works
List every accommodation you approved in the past year. Email each employee one question: does this solve the problem, yes or no. Record the answer and fix anything that comes back partial. Two hours.
PayoffA jury just awarded 400,000 dollars against an employer that discussed the request and offered some accommodations, but not one that covered the need. Defending a single disability claim commonly runs tens of thousands in legal fees before any award.

Check three months of hourly weeks against the 40-hour line
Pull the last three months of hours for everyone paid hourly. Flag every week over 40, confirm the overtime premium was paid, and check that paystubs exist and wage notices are posted. Two hours.
PayoffA roofer paid a flat hourly rate for 60-hour weeks is seeking 6,800 dollars for himself and asking the court to cover three years of crews. Unpaid overtime roughly doubles with liquidated damages, and attorney fees land on the employer on top.

Data
Decide which HR steps an AI agent may run without a person
List the HR steps an agent could run alone: payroll checks, sourcing, interview scheduling. Mark each automatic, needs review, or person decides, and send it to your vendor before anything is turned on. 90 minutes.
PayoffWorkday's new background agents let the customer choose which actions run automatically, and that choice gets made by default if you skip it. One payroll run corrected after the fact costs 10 to 20 hours of finance and HR time, plus the trust you spend explaining it.
20 hrs
payroll correction time avoided per bad run
Effort 90 minutes
