A third of US parents leave their job within six months of parental leave↗

Economist Lauren Thomas at payroll firm Deel studied nearly 5,000 workers across 13 countries, reported October 21. In the US, 34% of fathers and 33% of mothers were out of their jobs six months after leave ended.

Why this mattersMost of that cost is invisible, because the resignation lands months after the leave and not during it. Put a 30-day and a 90-day conversation on the calendar for everyone returning, and ask one question: what about this schedule is not working.

California moved to count postpartum depression as a pregnancy condition↗

California's Civil Rights Council proposed new rules on October 19, the first update in over a decade. Pregnancy protections would cover postpartum depression, low milk supply and back pain, and working from home would count as an accommodation.

Dec 8
deadline for comments on the proposed rules
Why this mattersThis is a proposal and not law yet, and it tells you where the line is moving. Write down which conditions your managers treat as pregnancy-related and who approves a remote-work accommodation, so the answer is not invented during one awkward conversation.

Your hiring software is moving approvals into the chat window your team lives in↗

iCIMS launched a hiring agent on October 21 that works inside Microsoft Teams, flagging what needs attention and letting managers review candidates, give feedback and approve hires in the chat. It reaches customers from October 26.

Oct 26
when the hiring agent starts reaching customers
Why this mattersAn approval given in a chat message is still a hiring decision, and you have to be able to show it later. Before this is switched on, write down which steps the agent may finish alone and where the record of each decision is kept.

Checking the code AI writes is now a billion dollar business on its own↗

Blacksmith, which runs the automated build-and-test step software teams depend on, raised 66 million dollars led by Sequoia on October 21 at a one billion dollar valuation. Its revenue grew 17 times in a year and it has run more than 90 million of those test jobs, as AI pushes out more code than teams can check.

17x
revenue growth as AI code outpaced testing
Why this mattersWriting got cheap and checking did not, which is where the new cost lands. Look at what your own team now produces with AI, then count the review hours sitting behind it. If those hours do not exist, cap what gets sent for review.

A sticky patch that grips wet tissue in seconds is heading for human trials↗

Hyunwoo Yuk, who trained in Xuanhe Zhao's lab at MIT, founded SanaHeal to replace stitches and staples with a sticky material inspired by barnacles that holds on wet, uneven tissue in seconds. It already has approval for trauma bleeding, and human surgical trials start next year, MIT News reported October 20.

Seconds
to grip wet tissue, in place of stitches or staples
Why this mattersThe win is not a better stitch, it is removing a slow manual step from the middle of the job. Find your own version: time the one step everybody waits on in hiring or onboarding, and ask what would remove it rather than speed it up.

Skipping one step let researchers watch cells get younger as it happened↗

A team led by Oliver Bruestle at the University Hospital of Bonn turned blood cell precursors straight into brain stem cells, skipping the usual middle step. Cells from an 80-year-old donor read as under 20 on a molecular age test after about 50 days, published this month in the journal Aging Cell.

60 yrs
of molecular age shed by the cells in 50 days
Why this mattersBecause they removed the middle step, the change ran slowly enough to measure while it happened. Do that with a process you only judge at the end. Record the days at each stage of hiring this month, so you can see where it actually slows.

Children talking to a chatbot used far less of their checking brainwork↗

Tzipi Horowitz-Kraus and colleagues at the Technion scanned 15 first graders and 16 adults during a five-minute talk with ChatGPT, published in Cerebral Cortex. The adults' control network was almost twice as active; the children's barely engaged.

1.8x
adults' control brain activity against children's
Why this mattersThe sample is tiny and there was no comparison task, so treat this as a prompt and not proof. The pattern still matches what you see at work: the less someone knows, the more they accept the answer. Have juniors draft once before they use the tool.

Three things to do this week

3 actions

Three moves with the best payoff for the least effort, each with what it is roughly worth. Even one of them saves hours of work, cash, or a risk you would rather not carry.

1
Retention
Put a 30 and 90 day check-in on every return from parental leave
Take everyone who returned from parental leave in the past year. Book a 30-day and a 90-day conversation with each, and ask what about the schedule is not working. One hour to set up.
PayoffIn the US, 34% of fathers and 33% of mothers are out of their jobs six months after leave ends. Replacing one person commonly runs half to twice annual salary, roughly 35,000 dollars on a 70k role, and these exits are people you already trained.
$35k+
per resignation avoided on a 70k salary
Effort 1 hour
2
Risk
Write down which conditions count as pregnancy-related
List the conditions your managers should treat as pregnancy-related, including postpartum depression, and name who approves a remote-work or duty-change accommodation. Keep it to one page. 90 minutes.
PayoffCalifornia has proposed rules naming postpartum depression and low milk supply as covered conditions and telework as an accommodation, and other states tend to follow. Defending one pregnancy or disability charge commonly runs tens of thousands in legal fees.
$25k+
legal defense cost on one accommodation claim
Effort 90 minutes
3
Data
Decide what your hiring agent may finish without a person
List the steps an AI agent in your hiring software could run alone: screening, scheduling, feedback, approvals. Mark each automatic, needs review, or person decides, and send it to your vendor. 90 minutes.
PayoffiCIMS starts shipping a hiring agent that works inside Microsoft Teams on October 26, and the default settings decide this for you if you skip it. One approval with no record behind it is what turns a rejected candidate into a claim.
$25k+
legal cost of one undocumented hiring decision
Effort 90 minutes
