Hiring firm Employ surveyed more than 1,200 US recruiters and hiring managers, reported October 16. 33% named AI-polished resumes their main stressor, and satisfaction with their recruiting software fell to 69% from 82% a year earlier.
69% v 82%
satisfied with their recruiting software, year on year
Why this mattersYour recruiting tool got worse at the only job that matters, telling real candidates from polished ones. Before you renew it, write down the two checks you need it to do, and ask the vendor to show each one in a live demo.
Operations
A California restaurant chain agreed on October 13 to pay 3 million dollars to settle a federal harassment case covering at least 100 women. Regulators said HR dismissed or never investigated many of the complaints it received.
$3M
settlement after complaints went uninvestigated
Why this mattersThe payout did not turn on whether the complaints were true. It turned on nobody investigating them. Pull every complaint your company received last year and check each has a written outcome and a date. Gaps in that file are what the money is for.
Operations
Boston Consulting Group surveyed 645 CEOs at companies making at least 100 million dollars, reported October 16. Almost 60% plan to replace a senior team member within six months, and the finance chief was named most often.
60%
of CEOs replacing a senior leader within 6 months
Why this mattersSenior exits are being planned, not reacted to, and the cost lands on you. Write down now who covers each senior role for ninety days if its holder leaves, and name one internal person who could step up. That page is cheaper than a search firm.

Research and technology that is making money, saving money, or about to change how work gets done.
Science
Anthropic published a report on its own staff on October 16. Junior people fell from 21% to 14% of its technical teams and from 27% to 9% of technical hires, while meeting time per employee rose 20% in a year, which the company puts down to needing human judgment and accountability.
27% to 9%
junior share of this company's technical hires
Why this mattersFewer juniors did not mean less human work, it moved into checking and deciding, which is why meetings grew. Before you leave a junior role unfilled this year, count the review hours your seniors already carry, because that is where the saving goes.
Science
Disney agreed to buy some assets of chatbot company Character.AI for 20 million dollars, and a court filing reported on October 18 shows it will offer jobs to at least 60 of its staff at an estimated 60 million dollars a year in pay. Most of those offered accepted.
$60M
a year in pay, against $20M for the assets
Why this mattersThe code and the brand cost a fraction of what the team costs every year, which is the real price of the capability. Price your own that way. Before you approve a tool to replace a role, compare its license to the salary and ask which one holds the knowledge.
Science
Ju Li's team at MIT, with Yang Jeong Park, built a search tool that pairs the atomic structure of a solid with plain descriptions of what it does, so you can ask for a property and get matching materials. Asked for battery parts it returned ones other labs had already flagged, published October 18 in Nature Communications.
90%
of solid materials on Earth the tool can search
Why this mattersSearching by what something does beats searching by what it is called. Your job postings do the opposite. Rewrite one as the three things the person must be able to do, then search your own applicants and staff against those, not against past job titles.

Three things to do this week

Three moves with the best payoff for the least effort, each with what it is roughly worth. Even one of them saves hours of work, cash, or a risk you would rather not carry.

Give every harassment complaint a written outcome and a date
Name one inbox for complaints and one person who investigates. Pull every complaint from the past year and confirm each has a written finding, a date and a decision on file. Fill the gaps. Two hours.
PayoffA restaurant chain just paid 3 million dollars in a case where regulators said HR dismissed or never investigated complaints. Defending one harassment charge commonly runs tens of thousands in legal fees, and the written file is what decides it.

Hiring
Cap any test score at one input of three in a hiring decision
Pick the role you test for. Write three must-haves, score each candidate separately on all three, and add a 60-minute paid task as the deciding evidence. Never break a tie on test points. 90 minutes.
PayoffA pooled study of 109,396 workers puts the link between test score and job performance near 0.20, not the 0.50 long quoted. One wrong hire commonly costs half to twice annual salary, roughly 35,000 dollars on a 70k role.

Write the two checks your recruiting tool must pass before renewal
List the two things the tool must do that it does not do now, such as spotting an AI-written resume. Put them in the renewal email and ask for a live demo of each before you sign. 90 minutes.
PayoffSatisfaction with recruiting software fell to 69% from 82%, and 64% of recruiters expect to switch within two years. Switching a hiring system costs weeks of setup and data cleanup, so a renewal that fixes two gaps is far cheaper than a migration.
