What changed in HR systems, compliance and workforce data for a team under 500 people, and what it costs or saves.

The ACLU filed a California complaint on October 9 against assessment firm Criteria Corp. It says the company's game-based emotional intelligence test tracks autism screening tools so closely it may count as a medical exam before a job offer.
2 tools
assessment products named in the complaint
Why this mattersThe vendor built it and you are the one hiring with it, so the exposure is shared. Before your next cycle, ask in writing what each test measures and how a candidate requests an alternative. Keep the reply on file.
Operations
The Labor Department suspended Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, HCL, Capgemini, Microsoft and Adobe from the permanent residency filing program on October 8, citing open federal investigations. No new or pending applications will be processed.
7 firms
barred from filing permanent residency paperwork
Why this mattersIf someone on your team is waiting on a green card filing, their stay now depends on a process that can stop without notice. List everyone whose right to work has an expiry date this year, and ask counsel what the backup is.
Operations
An Urban Institute study reported October 9 found about 7 million US parents aged 16 to 30 are working or looking for work. By ages 25 to 30 they are 10 percentage points less likely than non-parents to hold a high-quality job.
10 pts
the job quality gap for parents aged 25 to 30
Why this mattersThe gap is not about effort, it is about schedules that change every week and no visible next step. Post your front-line schedules two weeks out and name one promotion path. Both cost you nothing and cut the turnover you keep paying for.

Science & technology
Top 3
Research and technology that is making money, saving money, or about to change how work gets done.
Science
Thorsten Schumm's team at the Vienna University of Technology, with Germany's national measurement lab, built the first clock that keeps time using the core of an atom and corrects its own laser drift. It ran more than 24 hours unattended, accurate to roughly one second in 30 million years, published in Nature.
24 hrs
unattended, because it corrected its own drift
Why this mattersThe clock works because it measures its own drift and fixes it, not because it was built perfectly. Your processes need the same loop. Pick one HR process this week and add a monthly check comparing what it produces against what it should.
Science
Jaeyune Ryu's team at Seoul National University found that acidity right at the surface of an electrode swings far from the rest of the liquid and ruins reactions. Redesigning the reactor around that, rather than the chemistry, lifted the useful product from about 16% to 97%, published in a chemistry journal.
16 to 97
percent of the reaction giving the right product
Why this mattersNobody changed the ingredients. They changed the conditions at the exact spot the work happens. Ask where your own work actually gets done, then fix what sits around it, such as the approvals a manager waits on before they can start.
Science
Nikon stripped first place from a microscopy video on October 9 after scientists questioned features in it. The engineer who made it said AI was used only to improve how one area looked, not to make scientific claims, but the contest bars AI-made video, Nature reported October 12.
24 days
from the win to the award being taken back
Why this mattersThe work may have been real and the rule was still broken, because nobody had agreed what counts as AI help. Write one line your team can apply: say where AI touched anything you submit, publish or send to a client.

Three things to do this week
3 actions
Three moves with the best payoff for the least effort, each with what it is roughly worth. Even one of them saves hours of work, cash, or a risk you would rather not carry.
🛡️1
Risk
Ask your assessment vendor what each test actually measures
List every test in your hiring process. Email each vendor and ask in writing what it measures, whether it was checked for disability and race effects, and how a candidate asks for an alternative. 90 minutes.
PayoffThe ACLU just filed a state complaint saying a game-based emotional intelligence test may work as a pre-offer medical exam, and employers share responsibility for the tools they use. Defending one disability hiring charge commonly runs tens of thousands in legal fees.
$25k+
legal defense cost on one disability hiring claim
Effort 90 minutes
🛡️2
Risk
List everyone whose right to work has a date on it
Pull every employee on a visa or a pending permanent residency filing. Write the expiry date, the stage it is at and who the outside counsel is. Flag anyone whose date lands in the next twelve months. Two hours.
PayoffThe Labor Department just suspended seven large employers from the permanent residency program over open investigations, so filings can stall with no warning. Losing one specialized person to a lapsed status costs half to twice salary to replace, plus the open months.
$35k+
per specialized hire replaced on a 70k salary
Effort 2 hours
🤝3
Retention
Publish front-line schedules two weeks ahead
Pick the team with the most shift changes. Post the schedule two weeks out every Monday and hold it unless the employee asks to swap. Run it for a month, then count the no-shows and the quits.
PayoffWorking parents aged 25 to 30 are 10 percentage points less likely than their peers to hold a high-quality job, and unpredictable scheduling is a main reason they leave. Replacing one front-line employee commonly costs half an annual salary, roughly 20,000 dollars.
$20k+
per front-line resignation avoided
Effort 2 hours
