New Jersey's labor department rules took effect October 1. A worker is presumed an employee unless the business clears all three parts of the state ABC test, and filing a 1099 instead of a W-2 proves nothing on its own.
3 parts
all three must pass or the worker is an employee
Why this mattersMore than two dozen states run a version of this test, and the contractor you have used for years may fail part two. Pull your contractor list this week and mark anyone doing work that is core to your business.

A Highwire report released October 6 surveyed over 300 US people managers. 78% used AI for employee feedback or reviews in the past year, while only 16% of more than 700 employees were told AI played any part in theirs.
78% v 16%
managers using AI versus employees who were told
Why this mattersA review the employee does not trust is a review that changes nothing, and you paid for the time anyway. Tell people when AI helped draft theirs, and spend the minutes it saved on the conversation instead of the document.

Robert Half surveyed more than 2,000 US hiring managers, leaders and workers for its 2027 salary guide. 57% paid higher salaries than planned to attract hires, 72% raised pay for AI skills, and new hire salaries are forecast up 1.9% next year.
57%
of managers paid more than their plan allowed
Why this mattersPaying above plan once resets the band for everyone in that role, and your current staff will find out. Before you match an offer, write down the one skill you are paying extra for, then check what the people already doing it earn.

Science
Qifan Yu, Nina Cao and Kaitlyn Becker at MIT built a rubber sheet threaded with bendable light pipes, so it reports its own 3D shape as it folds. Average error was under 0.4 centimeters against 1 to 2 for stiff sensors, and it still worked with several pipes cut, published October 8 in Advanced Intelligent Systems.
0.4 cm
average shape error, against 1 to 2 for stiff parts
Why this mattersIt degrades instead of failing, because no single pipe is essential. Check your own single points of failure. If one person is the only one who can run payroll or approve an offer, name and train a backup before the next vacation.
Science
OpenAI posted more than 700 AI-written mathematics papers to a public code repository on October 6, aimed at hundreds of well-known open problems. Mathematicians told Nature on October 7 that the volume is staggering and that some of their own projects were scooped before they could publish.
700+
AI-written math papers released in one day
Why this mattersProducing work is now cheaper than reviewing it, and the review queue is where the cost lands. Count how much AI-drafted material one of your managers is expected to check each week. If it is more than an hour, the check is not happening.
Science
NASA released more than 800 gigabytes of images, audio and written notes from the four Artemis II astronauts who flew past the Moon in April, Nature reported on October 7. The crew spent over six hours observing, and sunlight sometimes washed out their view of the terrain.
800 GB
of crew notes, photos and audio from one flight
Why this mattersThe instruments already had the data, and the crew's own account is being compared against it because people notice what sensors miss. Ask the three people closest to a stuck process what they see, and put their answers next to your system report.

Three things to do this week

Three moves with the best payoff for the least effort, each with what it is roughly worth. Even one of them saves hours of work, cash, or a risk you would rather not carry.

Test every contractor against all three parts of the ABC test
List everyone you pay on a 1099. For each, mark whether the work sits outside your core business, whether you set their hours or rate, and whether they have other clients. Flag anyone who fails one. Two hours.
PayoffNew Jersey's rules took effect October 1 and more than two dozen states use a version of this test. One reclassified contractor commonly means back payroll taxes, unpaid overtime and penalties, landing in the tens of thousands for a small team before legal fees.

Say when AI helped write a review, and spend the saved time talking
Ask managers to state in each review whether AI drafted any of it. Require one specific example per rating that AI could not have known. Book the review conversation for the full slot. 90 minutes.
Payoff78% of managers used AI on feedback while only 16% of employees were told. A review people do not trust buys nothing, and a weak written record is the first document asked for in a termination dispute, where defense commonly runs tens of thousands.

Name the skill before you pay above your own salary band
Take every offer you made above plan this year. Write the one skill that justified it, then check what current staff doing that skill earn. Fix the gaps you find or stop paying the premium. Two hours.
Payoff57% of managers paid more than planned, mostly for specialized or AI skills, while new hire pay is forecast up only 1.9%. A premium a new hire can see and a current employee cannot is how you lose the person you already trained, at half to twice salary to replace.
