Employment attorney Tracey Diamond writes in HR Dive that AI-fabricated images now appear in harassment claims; two employees have already sued over weak deepfake investigations, and the EEOC treats sharing sexual deepfakes as harassing conduct.
2 suits
employees suing over weak deepfake investigations
Why this mattersA small employer without an investigation protocol is exposed either way: accept a fake and you discipline the wrong person, dismiss a real complaint and you face a claim. This week, add one line to the harassment policy covering AI-generated images and name who does forensic review.

An Insights survey of 880 HR leaders in 11 countries found 39% expected major disruption from their last change program but 51% got it, 41% of affected organizations needed over three months to recover, and 87% of HR were not highly prepared.
41%
of disrupted organizations took 3+ months to recover
Why this mattersA three-month productivity dip on a 50-person team is a real cost, and much of it comes from HRIS or payroll changes nobody planned for. Before the next system switch, write a one-page change plan: who is affected, what breaks on day one, and who answers questions in week one.

HR Brew reports that California lawmakers approved Assembly Bill 1883 in late August. It would bar employers from using AI surveillance tools that collect neural data or predict workers' emotional states, and it now awaits the governor's signature.
AB 1883
California bill banning emotion-inferring AI at work
Why this mattersSentiment features are switched on by default in some engagement and call-analytics tools, which means a company can be in scope without ever deciding to be. This week, ask each vendor in writing whether their product infers employee emotion, and turn that feature off for California staff.

Princeton University and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory built PACMAN, an AI framework that adjusts fusion plasma in about 20 milliseconds and predicts tearing instabilities 200 milliseconds ahead, tested in five DIII-D tokamak experiments. The first model took months to build; later ones took days. Published in Nuclear Fusion, reported by ScienceDaily on September 6.
20 ms
AI reaction time vs seconds for a human operator
Why this mattersThe commercial lesson is the platform effect: the first automation is expensive, the second is cheap if it reuses the same plumbing. Build HR automation the same way. Pick one workflow, say offer letters, wire it properly into the HRIS, then reuse the pattern for onboarding and offboarding.

Nature reports that UK Biobank, which holds genetic and health data on 500,000 participants, found participant data for sale on an Alibaba marketplace in April and closed researcher access for nearly five months. About 700 of 1,500 institutions with downloads had never confirmed deletion, so it is moving to analysis on a secure platform instead of downloads.
700
of 1,500 institutions never confirmed data deletion
Why this mattersEmployee data leaves your HRIS the same way: exports to a broker, a payroll vendor, a departed manager's laptop. Nobody confirms deletion. This week, list every party that has received an employee data export in the past year and ask each one in writing to confirm it is gone.

AFP reports that data centers used 222 billion liters of water for cooling in 2025 and could nearly triple that by 2030 without changes. Microsoft improved water-use efficiency 25% and AWS 37% between 2022 and 2025, and Nvidia says closed-loop liquid cooling at 45C can almost eliminate water use at some sites.
37%
AWS water-use efficiency gain, 2022 to 2025
Why this mattersCloud vendors now report efficiency per unit of work, and customers will start asking the same of their own tools. Apply that lens to HR software: cost per employee per month, per platform. This week, total the monthly HR tech spend and divide by headcount to see the real number.

Three things to do this week
3 actions
Three moves with the best payoff for the least effort, each with what it is roughly worth. Even one of them saves hours of work, cash, or a risk you would rather not carry.
🛡️1
Risk
Add AI-generated images to the harassment policy and name a reviewer
Insert one clause stating that creating or sharing AI-generated sexual or demeaning images of colleagues is harassment, and one line on who reviews digital evidence. About 90 minutes with a template and legal review.
PayoffA single harassment claim commonly costs tens of thousands of dollars in defense fees before any settlement, and a mishandled deepfake case can produce a claim from either side. A clear policy and a named review step are the first documents counsel asks for.
$25k+
typical defense cost of one claim avoided
Effort 90 minutes

Data
List every party holding an employee data export and confirm deletion
Check HRIS and payroll export logs for the past year, note each recipient (brokers, vendors, former managers), and send a two-line email asking each to confirm deletion. About two hours.
PayoffBreach response for a small company runs into thousands of dollars per incident once legal review, notices and credit monitoring are counted, before any regulator fine. Knowing where the data went is what makes a response fast and cheap.
$10k+
breach response cost avoided per incident
Effort 2 hours

Cash
Total your HR tech spend per employee per month
Pull the last invoice for each HR, payroll and benefits tool, add the monthly totals, divide by headcount, and flag any tool with fewer than five active users. About one hour.
PayoffCompanies under 500 people commonly carry one or two overlapping or unused HR tools. Cancelling a single redundant seat-based license typically saves several thousand dollars a year, and the per-head number is a benchmark for the next renewal negotiation.
$3k+
a year per redundant license cancelled
Effort 1 hour
